Rooted Housing

Architectural Design III

The initial focus for this project was circulation inspired from a precedent study of the Clinton Library by Hargreaves Associates. The goal was continual circulation through space, consistent environment from West Clifton Ave, and views of Cincinnati. As a person moves through the site a feeling of comfort is generated by intimate spaces; this relates to what Sou Fujimoto believes about tight spaces creating cozy environments. Separate building structures are arranged to create a series of voids that become intimate spaces. All of these buildings are connected underground creating potential for more private gathering spaces to be used by students. Each house is designed differently to suit a variety of student needs, while the interior spaces remain somewhat equitable with similar bedroom arrangements. The second structure holds four people in a co-housing unit or shared unit. All structures are located near the top of the site and do not take up a large area, enabling several community gathering spaces above and below the terraces.
